One thing I have gained from throughout this module is how confident I now feel with who I am as a designer and how I have realised my aspirations. My rationale at the beginning of this module was;
'Simple and effective delivery focussing on type and layout within identity, text and publication.'
Once getting into the briefs, I found that I was constantly looking for ways to include exhibition design into my work. I realised that this was something that was very important to me and therefore thought it was relevant to include in my rationale. My rationale was then changed to;
'Simple and effective delivery focussing on type and layout within identity, publication and exhibition.'
I would definitely say that identity design is my specialism, as well as further applying the visuals to a range of promotional material, something that I definitely want to continue to do.
Working collaboratively for the Photography Yearbook with Emma, Chloe and Carl was extremely beneficial to me in many respects. I've gained general design skills such as layout and grids and paying great attention to detail with little things I used to overlook. Then more personal skills such as how to approach a project and even small things like keyboard shortcuts.
Being able to experience first hand that dialogue you have with the printers was great, it definitely no longer feels daunting anymore. Just gaining an idea about print costs and how to locate stock has been great. I now feel confident that I know the 'language' and how to talk to them which is what I used to worry about.
What is frustrating in the photography yearbook, however, is that the presentation boards and product don't reflect the amount of time we put into the brief. It's the project with the least boards, but the one I spent the most time on.
The End of Year Show proposal ended up turning in to a substantial brief. I initially set out to have this as a short brief and use it to play with audience interaction as stated in my rationale. I really began to enjoy experimenting, and ended up with what I felt was a very strong concept, though it could of had a stronger design direction. I've now got something in my portfolio that isn't so 'safe', which is something that has been suggested in portfolio surgeries.
As the End of Year Show proposal became such a substantial brief, I feel that this is the reason that I didn't get to fully exploit the Type Design brief. I initially proposed to produce 3 typefaces, each with a range of promotional material, however I was only able to complete 1. I must admit, I really didn't enjoy designing the typeface as much as I thought I would and was almost making excuses to not complete the brief. This brief was also meant to be a research lead brief, and although I did the research, it really just became about what I wanted to produce. This is definitely a brief that didn't go too well.
On a more positive note, the Art ward brief is something that was really successful. It came together a little bit better after it was submitted to D&AD, but I'm generally really happy with how this brief went. The same goes to the Pica Cafe brief. I found that I generally just didn't know when to stop as I was enjoying expanding the range that much, and probably ended up spending a little more time on them than I should of.
My general time management wasn't great, especially at the beginning of the module. The late Easter definitely hit me hard, and it did take me a while to get back into that routine. I can't help but feel that I've let myself down in this module in terms of quantity of work, I'm not sure whether this is because there are a few briefs I didin't get to fully explore as much as I would of liked to due to lack of time.
Blogging has been good, once again pretty much kept on top of with my design practice, however I let my design context blogging slip a little. It's not that I wasn't looking, I was just saving the images and thinking that I'll blog about it later, which really was a mistake as I never got round to blogging the majority of it. This is the first time I've done this, I really shouldn't of let it slip.
Overall, a really great module and a good end to the year. I've got a few briefs that I'm really proud of, and gained a much better portfolio which completely reflects me as a designer. I actually feel professional and more than prepared to face the industry.

Brief summary
A really great brief, one that I got really excited about and I feel fully exploited. It actually got the the point where I couldn't think of any other way to expand it.
Really happy with the branding and the range of deliverables, a good mix of print / exhibition / web. I'm also happy with the concept, I feel I've successfully created something that appeals to the general public rather than just graphic designers.
Brief summary
This brief definitely didn't go to plan. I started this brief quite early on and left it to complete a live competition brief, but when I came back to it, I had lost all enthusiasm. I just couldn't get back into it, and it meant that everything was taking longer than it should be.
This was meant to be a substantial brief, but as the End of Year Show proposal became a substantial brief, I decided to cut this brief short. I initially proposed to complete 3 full typefaces, each with promotional material, but just ended up completing one. I am happy with the typeface, but I must admit, I really didn't enjoy designing it and realised that this isn't something I want to spend my time doing.
Brief Summary
BAGD yearbook pitch went ok. Our knowledge of print costs were minimal and this definitely showed through in the proposal.
We struggled to nail a good concept that we were all happy with, and this definitely hindered our progress. We were designing it without a concept, meaning the decisions we were making weren't done with good reasoning behind them. Looking back at the proposal now, though there are elements that are working, it generally doesn't sit together well.
In terms of how we worked as a group, there was definitely some tension. This should of been resolved as soon as, as this carried on into the Photography yearbook brief.
Brief Summary
Live D&AD brief went well and seemed to come up with solutions I was happy with quite fast. I was quite rushed towards the end though, and what was submitted to D&AD could of been much stronger.
I did pick it back up after however, and developed it into something which I feel is really strong.
Brief Summary
This was always going to be a short experimental brief which allowed me to play with typography and layout in a way I'd never done before.
It actually turned out much better than I expected and am really happy with the results. It did feel a little strange doing the packaging for the books, but I enjoyed it, and though it was a short brief, I managed to apply to a range of materials which I always enjoy.
Brief Summary
End of Year Show brief was quite a surprise to me. This, again, was another proposed short brief for me to experiment with concepts and audience interaction.
Really happy with how this turned out. Though the design direction could of been much stronger, the concept was there.
Brief Summary
Leading on from the BAGD yearbook pitch, we went on the do the Photography yearbook. Though we had some collaborative issues where there were deadlines missed and a general lack of communication, I am really pleased with the outcome and have something that I am proud to put in my portfolio.
I took a lot from this brief - mainly in terms of experience with the printers and a general idea of print costs, which is definitely very beneficial.
I think we went about this brief the right way in terms of starting off with a high spec proposal with a print finishes. This meant that though we sacrificed a few elements, we still ended up with a really high quality book.
Brief Summary
This live brief came in quite late on in the module and was initially unsure if I would take it on or not. In the end I did, it turned out to be a nice break, and was in an area that I hadn't experienced before - nail and beauty - so was quite exciting.
Though a short brief, I'm really happy with the outcome. It's got a different feel about it to my other work and I think it's nice to have a range of work rather than just what I want to do.
Crit feedback.
Was quite disappointed with this crit, it wasn't as helpful as I was hoping it would be.
I only got 3 pieces of feedback due to one member of the group having a hangover which is annoying.
Generally the feedback was really positive.
In terms of the Art ward brief - dan suggested that I mocked up the posters to show the actual scale as he was a bit confused. I had thought about this before but was unsure of how to go about it. Definitely something I will make sure I do before hand in.
Pica brief - mixed feelings about the red/orange. After discussing though, it was decided that the red was more suited to the 'mood' and general comfy atmosphere of a cafe, which is what I wanted.

Questions for crit.
Design context
(there is a black and white printed copy out, but you can view a digital mock up further down my blog)
- Keeping with my concept, i've tried to go for a simple approach. Do you think it should be more informative?
- Any feedback on layout?
Ignore the cover - that's still in development.
Pica cafe
- Is the whole type theme coming through enough or do you think I should push it further?
- Colour - red or should I go back to the original orange?
Flatland
This is a quick experimental 2 day brief playing with how a book is read.
- Is it working? Is there too much white space? My aim was to emphasise the breaks between chapters, paragraphs etc.
- What briefs do you think are my substantial briefs?
General feedback on anything is much appreciated.

Tutorial with Joe
Had my tutorial with Joe this afternoon.
Raised a couple of issues I'd had with the design context publication - he said to refer back to my concept of simplicity and do just that.
He suggested having just images and only the client and designer information rather than trying to pack loads of information in about the designer. I definitely agree and think that this will make my concept much stronger.
Having shown Joe a few of my earlier briefs, there was a few things he picked out with the End of Year Show proposal. He suggested that to make the concept stronger to bring through the arrows that I'd used on the foyer onto the promotional leaflet and VIP invite. I realised it made sense as I had already used it in the signage too, and it would add to effect of opening it to reveal whats inside.
I definitely want to do this, but I feel that I have a lot on with other briefs, so it will be something to do if I have the time towards the end.
Overall, Joe feels I'm on the right track, and am in a good position in terms of getting briefs completed. Just need to get cracking with the design context publication.

Questions for the crit.
1. Cafe branding brief - 'Pica'
Brief is to produce branding for a typographical themed cafe. It's a small cafe, kind of like the opposite, smoothie company etc.
What do you think to the name? I narrowed it down to 3 possibilities, 10pt, Italic & Pica. At the moment I'm thinking pica is the most catchy. I wanted a link to typography but also wanted it to appeal to non-designers. The typographic theme will exploited further inside on wall graphics and menus etc.
Any thoughts on colour? Do you think the warm colours work best, or should I go for something cooler? The colour printed has come out really red on the laser printer, it's actually a burnt orange (see blog posts)
2. Photography yearbook
I've printed a few spreads out, but a full mock up is on my blog.
Any general feedback on layouts? Particularly looking at the photography.
3. Creative CV
A newspaper that gives a preview of my work to send out to potential employers.
(Its not fully printed, there's a few pages missing in the middle. It's just a mock up.)
Any thoughts on stock? I have experimented with both bulky and thin newsprint, the bulky didn't print out well but I like the thickness and whiter colour of the stock.
Do you think the images are keeping enough detail?
Do you think I should continue with the newspaper format, or make it into more of a book?
4. The Art Ward
Branding for a touring art gallery based in hospitals
I'd really like to expand this brief further, but am unsure of what I could produce, any ideas?

Crit feedback.
Really good crit. Was great to see where everyone else is up to, and got some good feedback.
Art ward feedback
Possible scope for expansion: Mag ads, leaflets, publication with work to buy, exhibition guide
Possibly move '+' up to the ascender height to make it look more like a 't'
Are the arrows around the exhibition unnecessary
End of year show feedback
Play with how it folds - french fold? - push 'take a peek'
Use teaser images rather than the full images
Type design feedback
Make sure research comes through more
Show typeface in context and put in publication
Convert to shapes rather than strokes - weights
Colour?
To clarify.
Things have been a bit hectic these past few weeks and I felt I needed to re-evaluate where I was going / what I was doing (just for my own sake really).
Significant briefs:
The Art Ward (D&AD brief)
- Pitch completed and submitted for competition
- Range completed: Logo, 3 posters, signage, exhibition space, badges, van, website
- Needs the range expanding for module submission - possible exhibition guide, not sure what else
End of year show pitch (turned into a significant brief)
- Pitch completed and submitted for competition
- Range completed: Invite, poster, foyer, interior/exterior signage, website icon and page
- Maybe develop design direction for module submission
- Happy with the range, though maybe an exhibition guide to tie it all together
Typeface design brief
- Have 1 typeface designed out of the 3 proposed
- Need to get other typefaces done and complete promotional material to go with them
Cafe branding brief
- Have initial ideas
- Need to get logo clarified and applied to menus, signage, interior graphics, etc a.s.a.p
Photography yearbook brief (collaborative)
- Concept and design direction almost done
- Possibility for fundraising events material, end of year show material etc
Other briefs:
Flatland brief
- Have initial ideas
- Will be a quick 2-3 day brief as a break from significant briefs
BAGD Yearbook pitch
- Done

Questions for tomorrows crit.
D&AD Art Ward brief
Obviously this has already been submitted to the competition, but i'd like to develop/expand it further for the module submission. Any thoughts on how I could do this?
End of year show brief
Again, something I want to develop for the submission. It turned into quite a substantial brief for me. Though I like the concept, I'm not sure the design is suitable for the college. What do you think?
Any ideas how I could make the concept come through stronger in the interior signage?
Type design brief
(Typeface has been printed but please find the rest of development, i.e spreads, on my blog)
Thoughts on the typeface?
Any ideas how I could make the type specimen more 'creative' rather than just a publication?
* Please note DA&D brief is on a separate blog due to privacy restrictions (opened in my tabs)

Tutorial with Joe.
Had a tutorial with Joe this afternoon and I took with me what I have for the Art Ward brief.
He said as a set its working really well, and the logo is nice. He mentioned that the legibility on the posters is something to look into, which was something i'd noticed but wasn't sure on. Just altering the contrast or applying a dark filter could solve this, or even play around with duotones. Joe also suggested changing all images to black and white as some are looking sepia, this could help bring out the green a bit more.
Joe also suggested changing the layout slightly, so that the logo was in the top corner as it seemed to be a little lost and the last thing you get to. It should be one of the first things you look at as it's quite important.
Overall he really liked the project. Just final amendments to make now and some signage mock ups and it should be done.

The brief.
Create a brand for a major new touring Art Gallery.
Creative Challenge:
Following a pilot scheme of an art gallery in a hospital, there is an opportunity to take the concept nationwide – creating a touring art gallery that will showcase a range of work including fine art, sculptures and sound installations produced by some of the UK’s most famous contemporary artists. This is an opportunity for patients, staff and visitors at hospitals to see creativity in a location they may not expect. The gallery will be in place for a month before moving on to the next hospital.
Your challenge is to create the name and brand for the gallery that has the impact to generate positive news, discussion and interest in the concept - building an appreciation of the power of art to connect with people.
Target Audience:
Patients, hospital staff, local and national press and TV, local artists.
Considerations:
• Your branding needs to extend beyond the usual elements of a logo, typeface, tone of voice and colour palette. This is an unusual project which means the jury will be looking for winning work to demonstrate unique approaches to building a brand.
• You should avoid the obvious choices of anchoring your brand to a particular piece of art or style. The identity should stand alone allowing the freedom of the touring gallery to constantly refresh it’s offering without becoming divorced from the brand concept.
• Your approach to the tone of voice of the brand will need to be handled with sensitivity. Hospitals by their nature have a diverse audience covering all social spheres. What is acceptable to one group can cause distress amongst another. This will need to be reflected in your final design.
• You may wish to consider the nature of art in hospitals. What are the benefits to patients or visitors at a time of medical concern? How can an appreciation of art help to aid recovery or
provide an opportunity to discuss issues of a sensitive nature by moving thoughts beyond oneself to looking at the wider world afresh? How can this inform your final solution?
• The space the art occupies will need to be clearly branded, communicating its purpose to the audience and avoiding confusion with pre-existing artworks already in place in the hospital.
• How can your brand generate the positive newsworthy elements to help with it’s promotion? Media coverage will be an important means for building awareness. This is also an opportunity to bring visitors to hospitals who wouldn’t ordinarily be there.
